The 1.2 PureTech engine is a petrol engine fitted to many Peugeot, Citroën, Vauxhall, DS and some Fiat models.

It is particularly well known for problems with its wet timing belt, which runs inside the engine and is constantly exposed to engine oil.

Why is the 1.2 PureTech wet belt a problem?

The main issue is that the belt can deteriorate prematurely when exposed to engine oil.

This can cause:

Belt degradation: The rubber starts breaking down and losing material.
Oil contamination: Small pieces of rubber enter the engine oil.
Blocked oil strainer: Rubber debris can restrict oil flow through the oil pump.
Low oil pressure: The engine may not receive sufficient lubrication.
Engine failure: In severe cases, the engine can suffer major internal damage.

Why should it be replaced?

Replacing the belt before it deteriorates too badly can prevent expensive engine damage.

It is important to have the belt inspected regularly, not simply wait until the engine develops a problem.
